Artist Statement
I find it difficult to be articulate about my
work. People rarely ask what it means or what it is about. The
ones who like it seem to relate to it on one level or another in
their own way. They often have a clearer understanding of a given
piece than I may have myself.
I usually start a picture
knowing precisely what, if anything, I’m trying to say; but in the
process of painting I may follow divergent tangents which present
themselves spontaneously so that by the time it’s finished, ideas or
feelings are expressed in an open-ended, abstract language.
I
like to combine absurd humor with an invented iconography and that
when I paint I often think about people’s fear of various natures
- ecological, sexual or otherwise- and their wish to destroy
them. I prefer not to define a message too plainly in the
work, instead inviting the viewer to interpret the pictures as they
please and hope that some meaning will seep through and speak to
them or at least provide an engaging and compelling viewing
experience on a purely visual level.
